Pour 1 1/2 C. boiling water over 1 C. quick cook oatmeal.
Add 1/2 C. butter or margarine. Let stand 20 minutes.
Stir in:
1 C. brown sugar
1 C. white sugar
2 whole eggs
1 1/3 C. flour
1 t. baking soda
1 t. cinnamon
1/2 t. nutmeg
1/2 t. salt
Add eggs and all dry ingredients to above. Bake 30 minutes at 350 degrees.
Topping
6 T. softened butter
1/2 C. brown sugar
1/4 C. canned milk
1/2 t. vanilla
1 C. coconut
1 C. chopped nutmeats
Spread on cake when done. Place under broiler for 3 minutes. Watch closely.

This is one of my Grandma Ella’s recipes.
Pour 1 C. boiling water over 1 cup chopped dates. Add 1 t. soda and let stand until cool.
Mix and add to date mixture:
1 C. sugar
1/4 C. butter
1 beaten egg
1 1/2 C. sifted flour
1 t. baking powder
1/2 t. salt
1/3 C. chopped nuts
Bake in 350 degree oven for 35 minutes.
Topping
5 T. brown sugar
5 T. cream
2 T. butter
Boil 3 minutes, spoon over hot cake and sprinkle with coconut and nuts.

My grandma’s family was from Norway so we ate a lot of desserts and foods from Scandinavia.
2 C. sifted all purpose flour
3/4 t. baking soda
1 t. cream of tartar
1/4 t. salt
1 C. powdered sugar
1/2 C. butter
1/2 C. vegetable shortening
1 egg
1 t. vanilla
Sift dry ingredients into a large bowl of a electric mixer. Add butter and vegetable shortening. Mix at low speed until mixture resembles course crumbs. Blend in egg and vanilla. Mix only until blended. Shape into 1 inch balls. Dough is fairly soft. Roll in granulated sugar. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Flatten with bottom of glass dipped in sugar. Bake about 12 minutes at 350 degrees.

This is my grandma Ella’s home-made brownie recipe.
1/2 C. butter or salad oil
1 C. sugar
Pinch of salt
4 eggs, beaten well
1 lb. can Hersey Chocolate Syrup
1 C. flour
1/2 C. nuts
Bake on cookie sheet 10×15 inches for 30 minutes at 350 degrees.
Icing for Brownies
6 T. butter
6 T. milk
1 1/2 C. sugar
Boil 2 minutes. Remove from stove and add 3/4 C. chocolate chips. Beat and spread on brownies.

2 eggs, slightly beaten
4 T. cherry juice (Maraschino)
1 pkg. white cake mix
1/2 C. Maraschino cherries, chopped
1/2 C. nuts
Combine first 3 ingredients in a mixing bowl. Beat until well blended. Stir in cherries and nuts. Spread in greased pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. Loosen from side of pan. Frost with powdered sugar frosting.
