My grandma’s family was from Norway so we ate a lot of desserts and foods from Scandinavia.
2 C. sifted all purpose flour
3/4 t. baking soda
1 t. cream of tartar
1/4 t. salt
1 C. powdered sugar
1/2 C. butter
1/2 C. vegetable shortening
1 egg
1 t. vanilla
Sift dry ingredients into a large bowl of a electric mixer. Add butter and vegetable shortening. Mix at low speed until mixture resembles course crumbs. Blend in egg and vanilla. Mix only until blended. Shape into 1 inch balls. Dough is fairly soft. Roll in granulated sugar. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Flatten with bottom of glass dipped in sugar. Bake about 12 minutes at 350 degrees.
